Fulbrighter Cat Del Buono Featured in Multi-City Photo Exhibit Produced by U.S. Government

Published on August 29, 2023

Cat Del Buono is part of the traveling photo exhibition, “Impact of Exchange: Stories from U.S. Exchange Alumni.” The exhibition features the photos and stories of 38 U.S. citizen exchange program alumni – ExchangeAlumni - and their educational and cultural exchanges to more than 30 countries. “Impact of Exchange” will tour across five host cities in the United States, August 2023 through Fall 2024.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs hosted an open competition for all U.S. citizen alumni of U.S.-government sponsored exchange programs. The photos and stories selected for “Impact of Exchange” show images of food, life, and friendships that alumni developed during these exchanges. The exhibit aims to share the excitement of international exchange and inspire future exchange participants.

Del Buono is a Brooklyn-based artist and a daughter of Italian immigrants. She chose Naples, Italy for her Fulbright project where she conducted art-based research on the uptick of domestic violence during the Covid-19 lockdowns and presented her findings through a multichannel video installation. Her “Voci” installation was shown to the public in December 2022 and won the Fulbright 75th Anniversary Award this past June. Her three photos chosen for the traveling exhibit depict awe-inspiring moments from her daily life while abroad, including Villa Pamphili park in Rome and the waterfront “lungomare” in Naples.

The winning photographs are printed on photo-quality vinyl panels that will be on display in public spaces in the select cities, all chosen from states with low rates of international exchange participation, according to the 2022 Open Doors report. The first stop of the exhibition is Portland, Maine, from August 31 to September 30, 2023. Additional stops in 2024 will be in cities in Arkansas, Idaho, and other states. The exhibition is funded by the U.S. Department of State and implemented in collaboration with two non-profit organizations, Global Ties U.S. and Photoville, with community-based partners as local hosts.

The exhibition is on in Portland, Maine until 30 September. Find out more.
