He was featured in an article by @remezcla... we are proud to feature this week, Nico Suárez Guerrero! "I am a Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) through the Fulbright Commision in Peru.
I am teaching Quechua with the department of Language and Culture at Pennsylvania State University. My Fulbright application process lasted around 8 months, involving an in-person interview in Lima, Peru that happened in December 2018. Then, I was in contact with people at the Fulbright Commission in Peru, to keep going with the the application that involved getting the right visas, and getting in contact with universities that need assistance with teaching Quechua.
I am from Mollebamba, Antabamba, and Apurimac in Peru. I am licensed in Tourism and I am fortunate to be the first Quechua FLTA Fulbright Scholar 2019-2020 at Penn State in Philadelphia, PA. As an FLTA, I teach in the Spanish and Portuguese Departments. I work closely with my supervisor to help coordinate and plan curriculum activities and extracurriculars, like participating in cultural events on campus and around Philadelphia.
As a Quechua teaching assistant, I try to keep a multicultural perspective, as well as spread awareness of Andean culture. I want to create visibility for Quechua and other indigenous languages that are in danger of extinction, in order to decrease their vulnerability. I like to hold debates over cultural and social themes, like Andean cosmogony, climate change, traditions, ethnicity and language. Also, the Quechua courses at Penn work with language skills development and understanding of culture over indigenous cultures.
