Sarah Erickson – 2019-2020, ETA, Russia

Apr 22, 2020

¡Hola todos! Me llamo Sarah, y soy de Nogales, Arizona. I am a current eta #Fulbrighter preparing to go to Perm, Russia!

I could not be more excited and proud to have the opportunity to be a Fulbrighter :) So much of what Fulbright stands for was my everyday reality growing up in a Mexican-American family in the border town of Nogales, Arizona. Even after moving from Nogales, I have never lived more than 45 minutes from Mexico and nothing else in the world could have instilled such a strong love for multiculturalism and international partnership.

Our family is a mixture of first and second generation U.S. citizens and I am incredibly proud to be a first generation college student as well. My higher education focus has narrowed in on Russian studies, specifically researching pragmatic consequence of nuclear terminology in political speech. I graduated in May, 2019 from the #UniversityofArizona with a Masters in Russian linguistics, language, and literature.

I am now embarking on my journey to Perm, Russia. My aim is to learn and foster understanding between citizens of different nations. At times this seems daunting, however, I am equipped with the best resource, my culture.

I am thrilled to act as a mirror between two nations which on surface level seem opposites. My experience in the U.S. I hope will illuminate more similarities than differences, and by providing the unique perspective of a #Mexican-American citizen, I hope to display how beautiful the diversity of our country is.

Thank you to #FulbrightLatinx for creating a platform epitomic of the Fulbright mission!
